The claim

Posture as a skill, not a position

A short brief on the experiment: what I'm betting, the question it answers, the instrument I've built for measuring it, what would falsify the bet, and why it's worth asking.

01 · The wager

I'm betting that posture is not a position you assume. Posture describes the active, persistent process of adjustment you do to direct your action, not a static position you hold. Which makes posture a skill: the learned ability for dynamic self-adjustment.

Skills can't be imposed with willpower, which is the standard way people try. You hold yourself to an assumed 'correct' configuration. But skills have to be developed through learning by finding new means for action. Embodied learning is slow and curious: making new distinctions, accumulating new choice until acting on your intention becomes spontaneous. Your posture is the visible shape of that choice.

You start learning to move in infancy, unintentionally, from a culture that pays little attention to how elegant posture develops. You learn just enough to meet the demands placed on you by your environment, but rarely become skilled enough to meet your own. The little you learn shapes into unvarying, compensatory movement habits that over time build significant inertia. What you've done the same way every time stops teaching you anything, and the pattern persists because repetition collapses the signal diversity that would show you an alternative. You can't change what you can't tell apart. What's missing is experience, not instruction: you grow the distinction by moving, and no one can have that experience for you.

Rich in embodied choice, you adjust fluidly. Poor in embodied choice, you adjust rigidly. Most of the possibility space of how you could move is invisible to you because you've hardly visited any of it. The infamous slouch is the shape of choice limitation trying to stand erect: the stiff neck, the hip that won't open, the shoulder that's always tight, the asymmetry that can't be exercised away. Each is a forced compensation, a resultant of undifferentiated learning.

The same lack of choice, felt, is what you call tension. Forces pile up into a few well-worn channels, and that pileup is the felt sense of tightness. Tension isn't something you relax away, and it isn't damage. It's something that dissolves as you learn more choices.

Change is produced by differentiation. What was perceived as fixed becomes distinct. For example, the ribs and shoulder blade that moved as one mass learn to move as two, and you begin to infer a different felt experience from each. When you find a new organization, you take it up at once with a felt click, then weeks of integration. The click is a sign of the practice. Change is additive because you can't un-learn movement. You can only learn better movement. The old way becomes one option among others. It's also systemic: new choice in felt movement coincides with new choice in how you look, think, and feel, which is why the same change shows up in the gaze and the face.

So the wager, plainly: a stiff adult is not a faulty mind or body. He is a person whose learning hasn't matured to competence: it was an apprenticeship few deliberately learned. And I'm betting that embodied learning can resume this apprenticeship at any age.

I'm the test subject: 34, an engineer's habit of measurement and a practitioner's years on the floor, with a scoliotic back and arthritic joints, someone who couldn't sit in a squat and couldn't feel his own curvature. Effortlessness names the direction of the study: fluid, smooth, proportionate, spontaneous, costing what it should, carrying its own aesthetic. It's not a summit I'm claiming. Three years of daily practice has brought deep but partial change, still going.

02 · The question

Can a stiff adult learn to move effortlessly? And can that change be documented and measured?

The sub-questions:

  • How can posture be meaningfully altered at all?
  • How long does change take, and what does it look like in feeling and in form?
  • How can effortlessness be measured in movement? And can it be recognized without specialized equipment?

03 · The instrument: fixation, and its differentiation

In movement, unskilled posture can become observable as a set of invariant relationships. For example, the pelvis, the feet, the knees: same placement, same bend, same separation, every time. One foot always flexing more than the other; one knee always drawing in more than the other. The elbows pressed against the floor in the same way. The head and eyes moving to the same direction every time. The ribs and chest lying nearly still. The same sequences performed the same way, hardly ever varied. These are the measurable forms of undifferentiated learning, seen in action as relationships that remain fixed. The person doesn't change them because he does them compulsively, meaning he does them without choice. He doesn't know the hundreds of ways the thing could be done, so no other configuration exists in his self-image.

The measure of improvement is the differentiation of these relationships. Fixed relationships can be scored at assessment:

The score is how many relationships sit at each level and how they shift between assessments. The target is adjustability. A persisting invariance is failure to learn.

What that can look like in movement

  • The gaze and the act. When someone moves without knowing what he's doing, he also looks without knowing: the gaze wanders from the act, which reads as uncertainty or performance. When the movement differentiates, the gaze is in it: finding the acting part at the moment of action.
  • The eyes and each other. The two eyes are a left–right pair always converging at one fixed setting: the same left–right invariance the scoliotic spine carries, one step up. When it differentiates, the setting becomes adjustable and the pair can move by choice instead of habit.
  • The head's tilt. The head is carried at the same angle, every time: the habitual tilt, the top end of the same asymmetry the spine shows below it. When it differentiates, the orientation stops being a fixed setting: the head turns toward what the person intends, from many angles, instead of always arriving at the same one.
  • The face. Unskilled posture shows in the face as a fixed grimace: an involuntary, insecure, incongruent look. As tone starts to distribute, the face settles into congruence and calm.
  • The whole body's economy. The pileup that is felt as tightness shows in movement as jerky coordination: compulsively fast, labored, disproportionate movement. As it differentiates, effort becomes distributed, movement proportionate, which reads as grace. This is the readout closest to effortlessness.
  • The two sides. One side participates differently, always the same one; the other trails, compensates, or is absent. Difficulty is expressed asymmetrically. As it differentiates, what only one side could do becomes doable on command from either side. Symmetrical function develops.

They're one coordination and the wager predicts they move together.

Because the wager is a directional claim about observables, it can fail. If these fixed relationships don't change, the wager is falsified: the undifferentiated map is still doing the same thing it did in the beginning.

04 · The experiment

A long-term, single-subject, public self-experiment. And because the method is teachable, it can become a replicable experiment.

Me, a 34-year-old adult with stiff, asymmetric posture.

02 · The intervention

Daily practice of slow, gentle, playful, exploratory, floor-based lessons guided by voice. Small unfamiliar movements, felt rather than forced, in the environment the practice requires: effort lowered, sensation amplified, novel configurations/referents made available.

03 · The apparatus

A garage studio with multi-angle cameras, hundreds of hours of recorded practice, and a running record of what changed and when.

04 · The reporting

Honest, still in progress, public. The credibility is the footage and the refusal to claim completion.

05 · The trajectory

If the results become compelling enough, I'll invite others to run it on themselves: a voice-guided lesson as an entry point, then a progression, as an education product. Every person who practices becomes another subject in the same study. That product is what I'm building; it doesn't exist yet. Experimental results come first.

This is one person's self-reported evidence. The replication across future students is the point of the trajectory.

05 · Why this question is worth asking

The failure is enormous and it's not shrinking. Chronic pain is roughly a $700-billion-a-year problem in the United States alone (2022 national estimates), and the dominant approaches don't produce real change: millions have tried faithfully for years and haven't fundamentally changed their distorted movement patterns. Traditional approaches lean on two dominant angles to the problem, and they both share a 'corrective' premise. The body-centered ones treat you as a structure to be fixed: stretch it, strengthen it, mobilize it, drill it, treat it, cut it(!). The mind-centered ones treat you as a mind to be relaxed: calm it, retrain it, reframe it, unlearn it, think-your-way out of it. The corrective premise beneath both assumes fault in a thing rather than appreciating a person as a functional whole. Decades and billions of dollars later, most of the people they serve are largely stuck. And these people are made to believe their failure is from lacking effort. I was one of them.

Maybe the shared premise is the failure. Maybe a person is not a body to be fixed, and not a mind to be relaxed. A person is a sensing, intending whole. And most people are not adequately skilled at directing their own intention, because nothing in their development deliberately nurtured the conditions under which that skill could mature: the slow exploration, the unfamiliar configurations, the accumulating choice, the autonomy to direct themselves and to their own liking. The theory points here too: demands placed on a person before he has learned to meet them distort the learning structure. Forceful education habituates conflict and produces compensation: people learn to perform without understanding. If that's right, the stiff, stuck person isn't defective, but under-skilled in a way he has never learned to outgrow.

The stakes are bigger than shoulders and hips. If posture is a skill, the same mechanism sits behind the states people call stress, stubbornness, insecurity. And behind a cluster of states treated as mental: anxiety, depression, ADHD, schizophrenia. There's a second opinion waiting to be taken on conditions the traditional angles treat as unrelated causes, and this experiment is one approximation for taking it. None of this is being bet or claimed right now. It's the territory the wager opens.

In my experience the question hasn't honestly been asked. Feldenkrais mapped this territory decades ago; the lineage exists. But who has subjected it to a long, documented, public self-test and reported the results straight? Everyone says train, exercise, stretch, fix; the word that names the actual work, learn, is unclaimed.

It isn't fitness, yoga, physical therapy, rehab, corrective exercise, medicine, or therapy. It has a close cousin in western culture: somatics, coined by a Feldenkrais student, Hanna. I learned the work the same way: from Feldenkrais, years of his recordings, thousands of hours of practice. Not from his foundation or the practitioners who came after him. His teaching still lives in his own voice. The standard his work implies is the top end of human movement skill, and I've never seen anyone in his name meet it. The practice isn't a category; it's embodied learning, and embodied learning is evidenced in movement control. So the question is the simple one: does the practice produce change? If it does, the change should be observable in the quality of movement on film. It isn't a radical claim. And it's the whole test.
